The Season of Graduations

By: Virginia Freire Portrait Photography

My eldest daughter was getting ready to go off to college.  And I would say I felt all the feelings, all the emotions. I felt very excited for her. I felt very sad. It definitely felt like a bit of a loss, but at the same time something I knew that was very important to happen for our lives...

The moment of graduation is filled with so many emotions – all the feels.  It is a time of joy, excitement, anticipation, but also feelings of loss and sadness as we watch our children physically and emotionally begin to leave the safety of the family that we have built and invested in for so many years.   It is a parting that is meant to happen, but it is nevertheless incredibly difficult to let go.  When our children leave home after high school, while they may return, they will never be home in quite the same way again.

Portraits during the season of graduation immortalize a moment, feeling, and connection that is on the brink of inevitable and irreversible change.  As Susan M described it to me, “We are at the start of an era – the big bang.  We are strong right now. We are in a good place with forces pulling us apart but we are holding together.  We are ready to pop!  It is like the big bang before it happens.”

It is in the midst of such dynamic energy that we have an opportunity to indelibly etch the images of our families into forever and to capture our children before they leave our nests and our shelters to embark on a journey where we become more observer than guide.

Let’s capture your graduation season. Because no story is quite like yours. ®

Having this picture of this time in our lives just makes me feel very peaceful because it felt at the time like there were so many unanswered questions in that moment - will she feel comfortable and happy where she is going, will she be able to maintain this close relationship with her siblings, and will she still come home and feel like we are this close family unit - and I think the answer was yes.   I think these pictures really remind me of that.  Both this picture which has our whole family together, but then also their portraits upstairs that I feel like are very much each about them as individuals but they are hung as a collection.  Which I think is a really nice reflection of what it is really like. That they are each their own person but they are also very much intertwined and they are a crew or a unit together.
